Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker – The Game
While his strongest impression was made in the world of music, pop singer Michael Jackson, who died Thursday in Los Angeles, also made his mark in video games.
Gaming site 1up has posted a retrospective of the singer’s impact in the industry. Most video game players likely remember Jackson from his appearance in the arcade and Sega Genesis releases of Moonwalker. Jackson also made a brief cameo in the music game Space Channel 5.
1up notes Jackson had ties to Japanese game publisher Sega:
In the early ’90s, Jackson was close with Sega, appearing at several charity events with the publisher and making a visit to their Japan headquarters (some believe that he even inspired Sonic the Hedgehog’s character design).
Jackson was also an avid collection of arcade machines. Earlier this year, the bounty of games ranging from a Pac-Man/Galaga tabletop cabinet to an arcade version of Super Mario Bros. were auctioned off. Head here to view the games in his collection.
There were also reports this week from multipleoutlets that Jackson was working on a video game starring himself.
